Why This Recipe Works
Only 4 ingredients - This is obvious from the title but it needs to be mentioned again! You don’t need lots of ingredients for a good guacamole and this recipe is a proof! This is truly the best guacamole recipe I’ve ever made and I’m so excited to share it with you!
The best flavor - Freshly squeezed lime juice, fresh cilantro, and red onion gives the guacamole more flavor than you’d expect. The key is also to use good, ripe avocados for an extra creamy guac!
Great for everything - There are endless uses for this guacamole! You can serve it as a dip, avocado toast, add it to salads, rice or quinoa bowls, or as a side with roasted fish, chicken, and veggies. But really, you can add it to practically anything and everything savory! It’s delicious in tacos as well!
Ingredients
- Avocado - The better the avocados, the better the guacamole. It should be soft to touch but not too soft with spots that feel empty to touch. When you remove the stem at the top, it should be bright green inside, not moldy. If your avocados are too hard, leave them on the counter for 1-3 days. Once they're soft, move them to the fridge to avoid them going bad.
- Fresh cilantro - Fresh herbs add a ton of flavor to anything and cilantro shines in guacamole. If you don't like it, you can add parsley or chives but keep in mind it will change the flavor. You can use dried cilantro in a pinch but it won't have the same bright flavor.
- Red onion - Red onion works the best here but you can use shallots, spring onion, or yellow onion as well if you don't have red onion.
- Lime juice - Guacamole needs some acidity to cut through the heavy avocado.
- Sea salt and black pepper - I don't count these into the 4 ingredients because everyone already has them. Fine sea salt or Himalayan pink salt are the best options. I try to stay away from table salt which has all the minerals stripped from it. Use freshly ground black pepper if possible.
Variations and Substitutions
- Tomatoes - I left them out of this recipe because I find most people prefer guacamole without them, myself included, but you can totally add them! I recommend removing the seeds and pulp before finely chopping them to avoid the guac getting watered down.
- Garlic - If you have fresh garlic, I highly recommend grating some into the guac. One small garlic clove is all you need to add a ton of flavor. It's better to grate it on a fine grater than press it because it gets mixed into the guac better that way.
- Jalapenos - If you want your guacamole to pack some heat, add a finely chopped jalapeno or a fresh chilli. Remove the seeds for less heat. Alternatively, you can also add hot sauce.
Step-by-Step Instructions
- Add the avocados to a medium bowl and mash them with a fork until smooth.
- Add chopped red onion, fresh cilantro, lime juice, sea salt, and black pepper.
- Stir everything together until well mixed. Add more sea salt, pepper, or lime juice to taste.
- Enjoy immediately or store in an airtight container in the fridge for 2-3 days.
If you're making a bigger quantity, you can do this in a food processor as well. I like using a fork to avoid it being completely smooth.
Serving Suggestions
- Dip - The best and easiest way to serve guacamole is as a dip! Just dip your tortilla chips or veggies in and enjoy!
- On bread - Add the guac to toasted bagels, bread, baguette, or crackers on it's own or with other toppings.
- Roasted Zucchini Rolls with Guacamole - These rolls are made with thinly sliced roasted zucchini and make a delicious appetizer! The same thing can be also made with cucumber for a no-cook appetizer.
- In bowls and salads - You can add this guac to rice or quinoa bowls or various salads. The options are endless!
Storing
You can store any leftover guacamole in an airtight container in the fridge for 2-3 days. The less air there is, the better chance you have your guac will stay bright green instead of turning brown. It can still be eaten when it turns brown but it's not nice to look at.
Keep your guac bright green: To prevent guacamole from turning brown, put in into a small container and place plastic wrap on top of it. The plastic has to be touching the guacamole without leaving any air bubbles. Try to make sure it sticks to all the sides as well before closing the container with a lid. If the guac is perfectly covered with plastic wrap and doesn't have any air touching it, it won't go brown.
FAQs
No, I don't recommend it. It's best made fresh.
Your avocados probably weren't ripe enough so they were too hard and you were't able to mash them properly. Make sure you use ripe soft avocados.
There are many varieties of avocados but the most common ones go from green to black when they ripen and will be soft to the touch but not too much. Give it a very gentle squeeze all over, not in a single spot, you don't want to bruise it. When you lift the leftover stem at the top, the avocado should be bright green, not moldy. If it's still hard, give it 1-3 days at room temperature to ripen.
I love adding grated garlic! All you need is one clove of garlic. The guac really doesn't need anything else, it's so good as is it but if you want to you can add things like chopped fresh chili, diced tomatoes, or jalapenos.

The best way to keep your guacamole from browning is to keep it covered with no air touching it. Put it into a small container and cover it with plastic wrap making sure it touches the guacamole and there aren’t any bubbles. This prevents air from getting to it which prevents it from browning.
