    Why This Recipe Works

Just like Starbucks - I love remaking Starbucks drinks so you can make your favorite order at home! The most popular recipe on the website is my Iced Brown Sugar Oat Milk Shaken Espresso and it's been my go-to morning drink for years. This shaken espresso is just like it but with apple syrup instead. It's super similar to Starbucks for a fraction of the price! If you like it, you should also try this Iced Chocolate Almondmilk Shaken Espresso!

Easy to make - There are no complicated ingredients in this drink. The syrup is made with just four ingredients and it's ready to use in 30 minutes. You'll need an espresso maker to brew the espresso but the rest is easy and totally foolproof!

Healthier - The syrup for this drink is made with real apples and brown sugar. Starbucks' syrup has natural flavors without any actual apples in it. When you make it at home from scratch, you know exactly what's going in and how much sugar you're actually consuming.

Cheaper - Buying Starbucks every day can get pricey so making it at home is a great way to save some money. The syrup makes enough for about 12 servings so you'll get almost two weeks' worth of coffees from a single batch!

    Ingredients

    • Brown sugar - Brown sugar gives the syrup a slight molasses flavor, unlike cane sugar. If you want an even stronger flavor, use dark brown sugar. Keep in mind though that it might overpower the apple flavor.
    • Apples - Practically any sweet apple variety you have on hand will work in the syrup. I like Honey Crisp or Gala apples. I like to avoid the more sour varieties like Granny Smith because they don't give the syrup enough sweet apple flavor.
    • Spices - The syrup is flavored with apple pie spice and vanilla extract. You can also add some extra cinnamon to enhance the flavors even more.
    • Coffee - The recipe calls for 2-3 shots of freshly brewed espresso.
    • Oat milk - The original Starbucks recipe calls for oat milk. I like using unsweetened oat milk but any milk you'd normally order in your shaken espresso works here.

    Variations and Substitutions

    • Cane sugar - If you don't have brown sugar, you can also use regular cane sugar or white sugar if that's all you have.
    • Apple sauce - If you don't have fresh apples, you can use unsweetened apple sauce instead. I used a similar syrup with apple sauce in this Iced Apple Crisp Macchiato.
    • Sugar-free - You can substitute the brown sugar for a sugar-free brown sugar substitute if needed. You can also use maple syrup instead. I like using dark maple syrup, its flavor goes great with the apple pie spice!
    • Coffee - If you don't have an espresso machine, don't fret. You can use cold brew or strong-brewed coffee. You might just have to adjust the amount because espresso is stronger and more concentrated so you need less of it.

    Step-by-Step Instructions

    Apple Brown Sugar Syrup

    1. Add brown sugar, water, diced apples, and apple pie spice to a medium saucepan.
    2. Bring to a boil stirring constantly until the sugar dissolves to make sure it doesn’t burn.
    3. Lower the heat and simmer for 15 minutes stirring occasionally.
    4. Take the syrup off the heat, stir in vanilla extract, and allow it to cool for 10-15 minutes.
    5. Strain the syrup into a large jar or a bowl through a fine mesh strainer. Use a spoon to squeeze as much syrup out of the apples as possible.
    6. Transfer the syrup to an airtight jar and store it in the fridge for up to 2 weeks. Wait for the syrup to cool completely before closing with a lid.

Iced Apple Crisp Oatmilk Shaken Espresso

    1. Brew 2-3 shots of espresso and add them to a large mason jar with apple brown sugar syrup and a handful of ice.
    2. Shake the jar vigorously for at least 5 seconds until very frothy.

    1. Pour the drink into a tall glass (including the ice) and top with oat milk.
    2. Lightly dust the drink with cinnamon if desired and enjoy!

    Serving and Storing

Once you shake the espresso with ice, it's best served right away. The foam will start to disappear as the coffee sits.

The syrup however can be stored for two weeks in the fridge. Keep it in an airtight jar and make sure to use a clean spoon every time.

You can use the leftover syrup in more lattes (both hot and cold) or drizzle it over desserts, pancakes, waffles, French toast, or oatmeal. Try it drizzled over these Apple Ring Pancakes or these Apple Butter Waffles!

    FAQs

    Can I use store-bought syrup?

Yes, to save time, you can use store-bought apple-flavored syrups. My go-to brands are Monin or Torani though I've never tried their apple or brown sugar-flavored syrups.

Can I use apple sauce for the syrup?

Yes, you can replace the apples with 1 cup of unsweetened apple sauce. I highly recommend still straining the syrup after cooking to make it smoother and less thick.

    Is the syrup freezer-friendly?

Yes, you can freeze any leftover syrup in ice molds and add 1-2 ice cubes to your drink as you need. Brew your espresso right over the frozen syrup cube to help it melt faster.

I don't have an espresso maker, what can I use?

You can use cold brew or regular strong-brewed coffee. Espresso is more concentrated so you'll have to add more. 1 shot of espresso is 1 oz, I recommend adding 2 oz of coffee for every shot of espresso.

    Description

This drink is inspired by the Starbucks Iced Apple Crisp Oatmilk Shaken Espresso. It's made with homemade syrup and it's super easy and simple!

    Ingredients

    Units Scale

    Apple Brown Sugar Syrup

    • 1 cup brown sugar
    • 1 cup water
    • 2 small apples, core removed, diced (2 cups diced)
    • ½ tsp apple pie spice
    • 2 tsp vanilla extract

Iced Apple Crisp Oatmilk Shaken Espresso

    • 2-3 shots of espresso
    • 2 tbsp apple brown sugar syrup
    • Large handful ice
    • ⅓-½ cup oat milk
    • Ground cinnamon (as garnish, optional)

    Instructions

    Apple Brown Sugar Syrup

    1. Add brown sugar, water, diced apples, and apple pie spice to a medium saucepan.
    2. Bring to a boil stirring constantly until the sugar dissolves to make sure it doesn’t burn.
    3. Lower the heat and simmer for 15 minutes stirring occasionally.
    4. Take the syrup off the heat, stir in vanilla extract and allow it to cool for 10-15 minutes.
    5. Strain the syrup into a large jar or a bowl through a fine mesh strainer. Use a spoon to squeeze out as much syrup out of the apples as possible.
    6. Transfer the syrup to an airtight jar and store in the fridge for up to 2 weeks. Wait for the syrup to cool completely before closing with a lid.

    3. Pour the drink into a tall glass (including the ice) and top with oat milk.
    4. Lightly dust the drink with cinnamon if desired and enjoy!

    Notes

    • The recipe yields 1 ⅓ cup syrup which makes about 12 servings if you use 2 tablespoon per serving.
    • If you want a stronger molasses flavor, use dark brown sugar instead.
    • Starbucks drink size measurements:
      • Tall: 2 shots espresso, 1-2 tablespoon syrup, ¼ cup oat milk
      • Grande: 3 shots espresso, 2-3 tablespoon syrup, ⅓ cup oat milk
      • Venti: 4 shots espresso, 3-4 tablespoon syrup, ½ cup oat milk
    • Starbucks shaken espresso generally has less milk and more coffee than a regular latte would have. I usually end up adding ½ to a grande size but it depends on your preference.
    • Similar store-bought syrups: Torani or Monin.

What a delicious and inspired fall drink! I rarely get the specialty drinks at Starbucks, because let's be honest I don't go there that frequently anyway, and when I do I want something tried and true, so I am way more likely to enjoy this at home anyway!
