Why This Recipe Works
Easy to make - All you need is espresso, milk, ice, and white chocolate chips! This latte is so easy to make but it still tastes just like Starbucks! You can use chocolate sauce to make it even easier or you could make your own sauce but adding chocolate chips is easy and takes less time than homemade syrup.
Cheaper and healthier - Going to Starbucks every day can get expensive. If you're looking to save some money, start making your own lattes at home! It's so easy and just as tasty as Starbucks. By making it at home, you know exactly what's going in and how much sugar is actually added.
Sweet, chocolatey, and creamy - The trick is to use a handheld milk frother to mix the espresso with the melted chocolate chips to blend them in properly. It makes delicious creamy coffee with lots of white chocolate flavor without any store-bought syrups! If you like dark chocolate, check out this Double Chocolate Iced Mocha.
Ingredients
- Espresso - Freshly brewed espresso is what's used in Starbucks' white chocolate mocha but you can use cold brew or regular brewed coffee if you don't have an espresso maker. You'll just have to up the amount because espresso is much more concentrated.
- White chocolate chips - Starbucks uses white chocolate sauce but using chocolate chips and melting them in the espresso saves time and prevents you from ending up with expired syrup. You can mix hot milk, condensed milk, and white chocolate chips to make a sauce but I like keeping things super simple with this latte. It has the same flavor, less sugar, AND it can be vegan!
- Milk - I always use oat milk in lattes to keep them dairy-free but any milk you'd normally use or order at Starbucks works.
- Vanilla extract - Vanilla rounds out all the flavors and gives the drink some depth without being too noticeable. Vanilla paste or vanilla powder works just as well. Add less if you're using vanilla powder.
Variations and Substitutions
Milk or dark chocolate chips - You can make this with any chocolate chips you have on hand. You can also make it with a regular chopped chocolate bar but I find the chocolate chips melt easier.
Make it hot - If you prefer hot iced mocha, you can skip the ice, and add hot milk instead of cold to make it into a regular hot white chocolate mocha instead!
Step-by-Step Instructions
- Add white chocolate chips to a small heatproof glass or cup.
- Brew two shots of espresso over the chocolate chips and stir until melted.
- Optionally, you can use a handheld milk frother if the chocolate doesn’t mix with the coffee easily. Stir in a dash of cinnamon if desired.
- Fill a tall glass with ice and set aside.
- Add vanilla to the oat milk and stir. Optionally, you can froth the milk using a cold setting on your milk frother or use a handheld milk frother.
Serving and Storing
- Pour the espresso with white chocolate over the ice and slowly pour in the milk to make two layers.
- Top with whipped cream and melted white chocolate or white chocolate shavings if desired and enjoy!
FAQs
Yes, totally! If you have one you like on hand, you can use it instead of the chocolate chips or as a drizzle on top.
White chocolate usually has regular milk in it. I got vegan chocolate chips from a local online store. Look around your local health food store to see if they have any vegan chocolate chips available.
Yes, you'll just have to change the amount. Espresso is more concentrated so you'll have to add more if you're using regular brewed coffee.

Notes
Melted chocolate: Use a double boiler (a heat-proof glass bowl over a pot with almost boiling water. Make sure the water doesn’t touch the bowl.
Chocolate shavings: The easiest and quickest method is to use a box grater on the smaller side. A box grater won’t make proper chocolate curls but it does the job and it’s super easy!

Great work around the syrup there... I hate it when I have to buy something and just use a little for one recipe. This is one of my favourite Sbux cold drinks and I was thrilled to make a very similar drink right at home.
