Why This Recipe Works
French fries with the best flavor - This seasoning is similar in flavor to cajun seasoning, just a little smokier and garlicky. The combination of herbs, garlic, onion, and paprika (smoked, sweet, and chipotle) makes for the best french fry seasoning that will give you a consistent flavor with every batch of homemade french fries.
Easy and convenient - The best thing about homemade spices is that you can adjust the flavor to your liking including the amount of salt you add. A lot of seasonings you find in grocery stores contain anticaking agents and fillers that are completely unnecessary. Making your own is healthier, cheaper, and easy!
Lots of uses - This seasoning mix is a great addition to your spice rack. It's perfect on any type of fries (deep-fried fries, breakfast potatoes, oven-roasted potato wedges, sweet potato fries) and it has a long shelf life! This makes it also a great DIY gift for any occasion.
Ingredients
- Dried herbs - I've tried the recipe with various herbs but oregano and thyme is my favorite combo with the rest of the spices. The fresher the dried herbs, the more flavor the blend will have.
- Garlic powder - You'll need granulated garlic that's most often called garlic power. This is a big part of this spice, don't skip it!
- Onion powder - Granulated onion adds an extra layer of flavor to this spice.
- Smoked paprika - This one can't be missing from this spice blend. It makes the fries a little smoky without adding any heat and goes so well with garlic.
- Paprika - Aside from smoked paprika, I also add regular sweet paprika for added flavor and color.
- Chipotle powder - Chipotle adds heat and smokiness. You can add less or more depending on your heat preference.
- Sea salt - Use sea salt or Himalayan pink salt, not table salt, whenever possible.
- Black pepper - Use freshly ground black pepper whenever possible. I always use slightly more coarsely ground black pepper. If you only have fine black pepper, add a little less to avoid the spice being too pepper-heavy.
Variations and Substitutions
- Spicy without chipotle - If you don't have chipotle powder, you can use cayenne pepper or crushed red pepper flakes instead. The spice level isn't the same with those so be careful. Cayenne is very spicy so ¼ teaspoon will be enough. Crushed red pepper flakes are milder so you can add 1-2 teaspoons or to taste.
- Rosemary - I like the oregano and thyme combination with the other spices the most but if you don't have thyme, you can use crushed rosemary instead. You can also just add it along with thyme and oregano for added flavor!
- Celery salt - You can use celery salt in place of regular salt for a lower sodium content.
Step-by-Step Instructions
- Add all spices and herbs into a jar or a bowl.
- Shake or whisk everything together until well mixed.
- Store in an airtight jar at room temperature for up to 6 months.
Serving Suggestions
French fries - If you like to make regular deep-fried fries, toss them with this seasoning after you fry them while they're still hot. It makes them so flavorful!
Roasted potatoes - My favorite way to cook potatoes is by cutting them into fries or wedges and roasting them in the oven. If you love homemade dips, you have to try this House Sauce, it's also delicious in burgers.
Breakfast potatoes - I highly recommend trying this spice mix on these Crispy Breakfast Potatoes! It's one of the most popular recipes on the blog and for a good reason - it's one of my all-time favorites too! They're crispy on the outside, soft on the inside, and so flavorful. The recipe also has exact measurements for the spices so you don't have to make a big batch if you only want to try it.
Storing
Store the seasoning in an airtight jar or a spice jar in a cool dry place away from sunlight (at room temperature) for 6 months.
The fresher your spices and herbs are, the longer the spice mix will last. All spices and dried herbs lose their potency as they sit so the spices won't have as much flavor if they sit for too long.
FAQs
It has a little bit of chipotle pepper to make it a little spicy but you can adjust the amount based on your preference or leave it out completely.
If you want to try this seasoning before making a big batch, use the measurements in the recipe for these Crispy Breakfast Potatoes.
