Why You'll Love This Sage Syrup

Light herbal flavor - Sage has an amazing rich herbal flavor that's delicious in any cocktail or mocktail on its own or in combination with other syrups and berries. Add it to your selection of syrups or make a signature cocktail with it for your holiday party. It's sure to be the talk of the party and a hit!

Lots of uses - Besides just cocktails and mocktails, you can add this syrup to sodas, iced teas, hot tea, lemonades, or to sparkling or still water with a little squeeze of lemon.

Easy and budget-friendly - Making your own syrups at home is easier than you may think and so simple. All you need for this one is water, cane sugar, and fresh sage. It can be ready in just 15 minutes, it lasts 2 weeks in the fridge, and it's freezer-friendly!

    Ingredients

    • Sage - Fresh sage is necessary here for the best flavor. You'll simmer it with the water and sugar first and then steep it as you would tea. Dried sage doesn't work in this recipe.
    • Cane sugar - You can use cane sugar or white sugar here depending on what you have and prefer. I like using cane sugar in most syrup recipes because it's less processed but it still has a very neutral flavor. Keep in mind that cane sugar yields darker, less clear syrup than white sugar would.
    • Water - Use filtered water whenever possible for the best flavor.

    Variations and Substitutions

Sugar-free - I haven't tried this so I can't guarantee results but if you like using a sugar-free substitute that can be used in a 1:1 ratio with sugar in your syrups, you can use it in this one as well. Keep in mind this will probably change the flavor of the syrup and it won't last as long because sugar acts as a preservative.

    Step-by-Step Instructions

    1. Add cane sugar, water, and fresh sage to a medium pot.
    2. Bring the mixture to a simmer while stirring constantly until the sugar is dissolved.
    3. Simmer the syrup for 5 minutes.

    1. Take it off the heat and let it rest for 5 minutes before removing the sage. Steep it for longer if you want the syrup extra strong.
    2. Transfer the syrup to an airtight jar and store it in the fridge for up to 2 weeks.
    3. Wait for the syrup to cool before closing the jar with a lid.

    Serving Suggestions

Cocktails - This herbal syrup is delicious with practically any spirit both light and dark. You can mix it with gin, rum, tequila, or even bourbon and champagne! Try it in this Blackberry Margarita or this Pomegranate Mimosa! It goes with berries, citrus, apples, or pears really well.

Non-alcoholic drinks - It's just as good in mocktails as it is in cocktails! Forget boring, overly sweet mocktails. Adding some sage syrup to a mocktail like this Blackberry Mocktail or this Blueberry Mocktail is sure to impress!

Tea - You can use it to sweeten your tea, both hot and iced tea. It's delicious in black, green, white, or fruit teas.

Sodas and lemonades - Mix it with still or sparkling water and a squeeze of lemon or lime. Just add a handful of ice and you have a refreshing, sugar-free drink! You can add it to a classic lemonade as well instead of some or all of the sugar.

    Storing and Make Ahead Options

Fridge - Store the syrup in an airtight jar in the fridge for up to 2 weeks. Wait for the syrup to cool down completely before closing the jar with a lid and always use a clean spoon.

Freezer - Store any leftover syrup you won't be able to use up in a freezer-safe container for 2-5 months when frozen properly. I recommend freezing the syrup in 1-4 serving sizes so that you know exactly how much you need to defrost.

Make it ahead - Homemade syrups store really well in the fridge or even the freezer so I highly recommend making it ahead of time. This will make putting together your drinks a breeze!

    FAQs

Can I use dried sage for the syrup?

I don't recommend it because it won't have the same strong fresh sage flavor. I haven't tried it so I can't guarantee results.

    Description

This Sage Simple Syrup is easy to make and it has an amazing herbal flavor, perfect for to any cocktails, mocktails, sodas, teas, and other drinks! It's perfect for the holidays and any party.

    Ingredients

    Units Scale
    • 1 cup cane sugar
    • 1 cup water
    • 3-4 springs fresh sage (10-12 large leaves)

    Instructions

    1. Add cane sugar, water, and fresh sage to a medium pot.
    2. Bring the mixture to a simmer while stirring constantly until the sugar is dissolved.
    3. Simmer the syrup for 5 minutes.
    4. Take it off the heat and let it rest for 5 minutes before removing the sage. Steep it for longer if you want the syrup extra strong.
    5. Transfer the syrup to an airtight jar and store it in the fridge for up to 2 weeks. Wait for the syrup to cool before closing the jar with a lid.

    Notes

Storing: Store the syrup in an airtight jar in the fridge for 2 weeks or you can freeze it in a freezer-safe container for 2-3 months. Defrost in the fridge overnight.

Fresh herbs don’t need as much cooking time to release their flavors as fruits do. Don’t let the sage sit in the syrup for too long or it’s going to be too strong. Taste the syrup and take it our after the 5 minutes if it’s to your liking. I find 5 minutes of cooking and resting is plenty.
