Why This Recipe Works
Delicious and versatile - There are countless ways you can use this homemade dairy-free ranch seasoning. You can sprinkle it on roasted vegetables, mix it with olive oil for a flavorful marinade, or stir it into yogurt, mayo, or cream cheese to create a creamy dressing or dip. It's also a great option for seasoning homemade french fries or popcorn!
Better than store-bought - The best part about making your own seasoning blend is that you know exactly what's going into it. Many store-bought packets contain artificial flavors and preservatives, which can be avoided by using wholesome ingredients from your spice cabinet. You can also control the sodium content more easily. By making a batch of this seasoning at home, you can have a jar of this flavorful mix ready whenever you need it.
Great DIY gift - Homemade seasoning blends make a great gift for any occasion! Double or triple the recipe and divide it into small mason jars for some homemade gifts.
Ingredients
- Dried herbs - Dried chives, dried dill, and dried parsley are the stars of this spice blend and can't be missing. Dried chives might be harder to find than the other herbs but I highly recommend adding them if you can. They really complete the ranch flavor!
- Garlic powder - You'll need garlic granules for this recipe. Granulated garlic is very often called garlic powder but it has a sandy texture instead of being completely powdered.
- Onion powder - Same as garlic. Powder and granules can be used interchangeably but I recommend granules. You could also use onion flakes but they're too big for most recipes, especially if you plan to use this seasoning in dips, dressings, or spreads.
- Black pepper - Freshly ground black pepper will have a better, stronger flavor but any pepper you have works. I like more coarsely ground pepper. If yours is very fine, add less or to taste.
- Sea salt - Salt here is optional. I like to add a little bit but you can skip it and add it to your recipes separately. Use sea salt or Himalayan pink salt whenever possible.
Variations and Substitutions
- Buttermilk powder - This is the difference between this recipe and your classic ranch seasoning recipes. Powdered buttermilk contains dairy so I left it out of this recipe to keep it dairy-free. You can add it for that true ranch flavor or you can add vegan sour cream, yogurt, or buttermilk to your recipes separately.
- Coconut milk powder - To achieve that creamy texture in your dressing, you can add powdered coconut milk instead of powdered buttermilk to keep the recipe vegan. Keep in mind that the seasoning might have a slight coconut flavor.
Step-by-Step Instructions
- Mix everything in a mason jar or a small bowl until well incorporated.
Pro tip: I like mixing most of my spice mixes in the jar I'll store it in so that I don't have to clean any extra dishes. Add everything, close the jar, and give it a good shake. Or you can use a spoon to stir it all together.

Perfect for a ranch dressing! I like that it's dairy-free even though I mix it with sour cream. It makes it last longer.
