Why This Recipe Works
Perfect for the summer - Nothing’s better than a frozen cocktail on a hot summer day! You can easily make crushed ice in a high speed blender and turn a regular margarita into a delicious pineapple margarita slushie. It’s easy to make and always a crowd favorite!
Great for a crowd - A great thing about a blended cocktail like this one is that you can make multiple servings at once! It’s really easy to double or triple this recipe for a pool party or a BBQ!
Homemade syrup - This is optional but I highly recommend making your own syrup for this margarita! It takes only 30 minutes and you can make it ahead of time. You can store it in the fridge for 2 weeks and it's great in so many drinks!
Easy and quick - All you need to do is toss everything into a blender and blend on high for a minute and you have frozen margarita! You can make your own pineapple syrup, skip it, or use store-bought. Either way, this recipe is really straight-forward and impossible to mess up!
Ingredients
- Pineapple - Frozen pineapple and ice is what turns this margarita into a delicious slushie. I highly recommend frozen pineapple for the best texture but if you have only fresh pineapple, you'll need to add more ice.
- Tequila - Blanco or Reposado tequila are both great options. I don't recommend Anejo because it's too strong for a margarita.
- Orange liqueur - You can use any orange liqueur you prefer but Cointreau or Triple Sec are two of the most commonly used brands.
- Lime juice - Freshly squeezed lime juice is always the best option whenever possible.
- Pineapple simple syrup - You can use store-bought syrup or make your own. To make your own, you'll need chopped pineapple, cane sugar, and water. It's a simple process that yields amazing syrup for cocktails, mocktails, and more!
Mocktail Version
If you want to make a non-alcoholic frozen cocktail, you use non-alcoholic spirit instead of the tequila and orange liqueur or you can just add water or soda of your choice. You could also add frozen mango or orange juice to add more flavor.
Step-by-Step Instructions
If you're making your own syrup, you'll need to do that first. I highly recommend making it ahead of time so that you can make the actual cocktail in just a few minutes. The syrup can be stored in the fridge for up to 2 weeks.
Pineapple Simple Syrup
- Add pineapple, cane sugar, and water to a medium saucepan.
- Bring the mixture to a boil stirring constantly until the sugar dissolves.
- Lower the heat and simmer the syrup for 15 minutes.
- Allow the syrup to cool for 5-10 minutes first, then strain it, squeezing as much juice out of the pineapple as possible.
- Pour the syrup into a glass jar and wait for it to cool down before closing with a lid.
- Store in the refrigerator for up to 2 weeks.
Frozen Pineapple Margarita
- Add all the ingredients into a high-speed blender.
- Blend on high until smooth.
- You might have to use the tamper to help the margarita blend without adding more liquid.
- Serve right away garnished with fresh pineapple or lime slices.
- You can also garnish it with pineapple leaves if you have a fresh pineapple. You can remove them from the pineapple by pulling at them.
Serving Suggestions
This cocktail is delicious with fresh summer appetizers like various dips, finger food, or salsa. To keep the pineapple theme, you can try it with this Pineapple Pico de Gallo and some homemade Pita Chips. You can also try it with some Mango Pico de Gallo or Black Bean Mango Salsa for more tropical flavor. You can also keep things simple with this amazing 4-Ingredient Guacamole and some tortilla chips.
You can also serve it with a light lunch or dinner. It'd be delicious with this Mango Quinoa Salad with Chipotle Dressing or this Strawberry Goat Cheese Salad.
Storing
This drink, just like any frozen blended cocktail, is best made to serving and enjoyed right away. If necessary, you can freeze it in freezer safe containers and pop it back into the blender later and blend it with a little bit of water or pineapple juice again.
FAQs
You know a pineapple is ripe when the leaves at the top in the middle are easy to pull and are bright green on the bottom. If they're brown, the pineapple is too ripe. You can also check on the bottom. If the middle looks it's starting to mold, the pineapple is too ripe and old. It shouldn't have any mold on the bottom and the pineapple should be bright yellow.
Any frozen cocktail will need more sweeter than a regular cocktail because anything frozen or iced always tastes less sweet than anything warm or hot. This is also true with iced vs hot coffee. The cocktail is sweet just enough but if don't like your cocktails sweet, add less syrup, taste the drink, and add more to your liking!
There is a mocktail section in this post a few paragraphs back. Just skip the tequila and orange liqueur and replace it either with non-alcoholic spirit, water, coconut water, or orange juice for more flavor.
