Why You'll Love This Maqui Smoothie

Packed with nutrients and delicious - Maqui berries are definitely a superfood and one of my favorite ones. I actually prefer it over acai because it's less earthy and it has a beautiful deep purple color. The smoothie has a refreshing tropical flavor and so many benefits! It's my favorite post-workout smoothie too!

Easy and quick - Breakfast doesn't really get easier than a smoothie (besides maybe overnight oats)! You can make it in just 5 minutes, and there's minimal clean up. It's easy to take it with you on the go if you're running to work or doing errands.

Versatile - Add more blueberries or more strawberries, swap the vegan yogurt for Greek yogurt, coconut water for milk, or add protein powder, greens, nuts, seeds, and more! Smoothies like this one are very versatile, which makes them great for every day without getting tired of them!

    Ingredients

    • Banana - I highly recommend adding frozen banana because it blends very differently than a fresh one. It makes the smoothie creamy, luscious, and thick.
    • Berries - I went with a combination of frozen blueberries, raspberries, and strawberries. You could also use blackberries, cherries, or red currants.
    • Mango - Frozen mango adds flavor, makes the smoothie sweeter, and helps to thicken it.
    • Coconut water - Raw, unpasteurized coconut water will always have the best flavor. Avoid pasteurized shelf-stable ones if possible. I like the refrigerated pure Harmless Harvest one. It's packed with electrolytes, which makes it great post-workout, and it has a great flavor.
    • Yogurt - I wanted to keep this smoothie vegan, so I used Yoggu coconut yogurt. You can use Greek yogurt or any vegan yogurt.
    • Maqui berry powder - Maqui is a dark purple berry native to Chile and parts of Argentina. It's rightfully a superfood because it's packed with antioxidants and is very nutrient-dense. It may lower inflammation, help with blood sugar and gut health, and it has many other health benefits. My go-to brands are either Organic Traditions or Navitas Organics.
    • Cinnamon - This one is optional, but I practically always add cinnamon to anything sweet.

    Variations and Substitutions

    • Acai - If you want to try something different, you can make this with acai instead! My favorite is the freeze-dried powder, but the frozen puree will work too; you'll just have to add more liquid.
    • No coconut water - You can use unsweetened almond milk or cashew milk instead of coconut water. Other options would be just plain water or freshly squeezed orange juice or any combination of all of those.
    • Flax and chia - I like adding ground flax seeds and chia seeds to most of my smoothies for a fiber, protein, and healthy fats boost. I also usually throw in one Brazil nut for selenium.
    • Protein powder - Add your favorite vegan unflavored protein powder or a berry one to make the smoothie more filling.
    • Green powder - My go-to has always been Tonic Alchemy green powder by Dragon Herbs. It has a good flavor, and it's packed with nutrients. I also like to add in camu camu powder for vitamin C.

    Other Maqui Berry Recipes

If you bought maqui berry powder for the first time for this smoothie or if you had it from a different recipe and don't know how else to use it up, you should definitely try my Maqui Berry Oatmeal or my Raw Blended Maqui Berry Buckwheat Porridge. The buckwheat one is an old one, but it used to be one of my favorite breakfasts to make when I wanted a break from smoothies and regular stovetop oats. You can also use acai instead of maqui berries in most recipes!

    Step-by-Step Instructions

    1. Into a high-speed blender, add coconut water, frozen banana, blueberries, raspberries, strawberries, mango, maqui berry powder, and cinnamon (if using).
    2. Blend the smoothie on high until smooth.

    1. Add more coconut water if needed to reach your desired consistency.
    2. Pour the smoothie into a tall glass and enjoy!

    Tips & Tricks!

    • Ingredients in the right order - To prevent anything sticking to your blender, I always recommend adding liquids first, then any leafy greens, powder, nuts, seeds, and lastly any fresh or frozen fruit. With maqui powder, I usually add it at the end because it's freeze-dried so it's not very powdery, but if you add protein powder or anything else, I recommend adding it before the fruit so it doesn't fly up and stick to the sides of your blender.
    • Add less liquid if you want to serve it in a bowl - See the paragraph below for measurements to make the smoothie thicker so your toppings don't sink to the bottom of the bowl.

    Serving Suggestions

This smoothie is meant to be served in a glass. It's creamy but not overly thick, so it's easy to drink through a straw.

If you want to serve it in a bowl with toppings, I recommend only adding ½ cup of coconut water and maybe adding an extra ½ frozen banana to really get that soft serve consistency. You'll also have to use your blender's tamper to help it blend without creating air pockets.

You can top it with things like fresh berries, hemp seeds, granola, yogurt, thick coconut kefir, almond butter, peanut butter, or even my magic shell chocolate sauce!

    Notes

Coconut water: I usually add 1-1 ½ cups of coconut water for a thinner smoothie. If you want to serve it in a bowl with toppings, I recommend starting with only ½ cup to make it thicker, and using your blender’s tamper to help it blend.

Storing: The smoothie is best served right away, but if needed, you can store it in an airtight jar in the fridge for up to 24 hours.
