Why This Recipe Works
Apple pie in a smoothie form - If you love apple pie but don't have time to make any complicated desserts, this smoothie will definitely hit the spot! The combination of apples, yogurt, honey, and warming apple pie spice is like dessert in a cup while still keeping it light and healthy. Frozen apple makes the smoothie thick and creamy without any banana.
Perfect fall smoothie - Smoothies are a great snack or breakfast for the summer but usually not when it gets colder. The only frozen ingredients in this smoothie are apples and with added yogurt and milk, the smoothie isn't overly cold. Apple pie spice adds warmth and makes the smoothie taste like a dessert in a glass!
Easy to make - All you have to do ahead is to freeze the apples. Then when you're ready, just throw everything into a high-speed blender and you're done! Top with whipped cream and crunchy sugar topping and enjoy!
Snack or breakfast - The recipe is made to serve two as a snack or light dessert but you can also turn it into a breakfast! Skip the whipped cream, add a scoop of protein powder, and enjoy as a light fall breakfast!
Ingredients
- Apples - You can use any sweet variety of apples you have on hand. My go-to are Gala and Honey Crisp apples. I recommend using frozen apples because this makes the smoothie cooler and creamier. If you don't have the time to freeze the apples, you can use fresh diced apples and a few ice cubes. Note that the ice cubes will water down the drink a little bit.
- Yogurt - Any yogurt works here. I like using unsweetened coconut yogurt but Greek yogurt is also a great option.
- Milk - I like using almond milk in smoothies but you can use any milk you prefer.
- Spices - Apple pie spice adds a ton of flavor to the smoothie. You can use store-bought or make your own. It's made with ground cinnamon, cloves, and nutmeg.
- Honey - You don't need much sweetener but a little bit of honey goes really well with warming spices and apples.
- Toppings - You can serve the smoothie as is or make it more fancy by adding whipped cream and a crunchy sugar sprinkle. To make it, stir together turbinado sugar and apple pie spice in a small bowl.
Variations and Substitutions
- Dairy-free - Use vegan yogurt, milk, and whipped cream to keep the smoothie fully dairy-free. I like using coconut yogurt, almond milk, and coconut whipped cream.
- Sweetener - To enhance the apple pie flavor even more, you can add this Apple Brown Sugar Syrup instead of plain honey. It also makes a great vegan alternative for honey! If you don't want to make the syrup, you can also use pure maple syrup.
- Spices - If you don't have apple pie spice, you can use plain cinnamon. If you have cinnamon, cloves, and nutmeg on hand, add a pinch of each. Remember you'll only need a little bit of nutmeg, it can be overpowering in larger quantities. You can add a little more cinnamon and cloves.
Step-by-Step Instructions
- Add almond milk, yogurt, chopped apples, honey, apple pie spice, and vanilla extract to a high-speed blender.
- Blend on high until smooth. Add more milk if needed or more sweetener.
- Divide the smoothie between two glasses and top with whipped cream and crunchy apple pie topping.
- To make the topping, simply stir together some turbinado sugar and apple pie spice.
- Enjoy!
Serving and Storing
You can serve the smoothie topped with whipped cream and crunchy apple topping (turbinado sugar with apple pie spice) or you can skip it, add some protein powder (I like unflavored or vanilla) and serve it for breakfast!
If you're serving the smoothie as a snack or dessert, it will serve two. If you're serving it for breakfast, it's one serving.
Storing: This smoothie is best served right away but if you need to store any leftovers, transfer it to an airtight jar and store it in the fridge for 1-2 days. Try to pick a jar that fits the amount you have left over the best. The less air there is, the longer the smoothie will stay fresh.
FAQs
Yes, if you don't have time to freeze your apples or simple don't want the smoothie to be too cold, you can use chopped fresh apples instead.
If you're planning to freeze it, I recommend using fresh apples. Refreezing frozen fruit creates more ice crystals. You can pour the smoothie into an ice cube tray and blend it with almond milk when ready to eat. Making the smoothie into popsicles would also be a fun idea!
Yes, you can keep the smoothie completely dairy-free by using vegan yogurt like coconut yogurt, vegan milk, and vegan whipped cream. I most often use almond milk and coconut milk whipped cream. You can swap the honey for maple syrup if desired too.

You can use fresh or frozen apples but I like using frozen apples to make the drink colder and creamier. If you don’t have time to freeze apples, you can also add one frozen banana to make the drink cooler or a handful of ice.
Breakfast: If you want to serve this for breakfast for one, add 1 serving of protein powder and skip the whipped cream.
