Why You'll Love This Smoothie
Delicious flavor combo - Cherries and blueberries are one of my favorite flavor combos. I most often combine them in my Cherry Blueberry Oatmeal with Acai, but for summer, it's so refreshing as a smoothie!
Creamy and vegan - The smoothie is creamy and similar to a soft-serve, without any ice! Frozen fruit and frozen banana especially work like magic in smoothies. I never add ice to any of mine and always recommend skipping it when you have frozen fruit! You can make it thinner for drinking or thicker to serve as a smoothie bowl with toppings.
Quick and easy - This is one of my go-to breakfast smoothies because it's not just sweet and refreshing, but it can actually be filling when you add protein. It takes just a few minutes, and it's super easy to take it with you on the go as well!

Ingredients
- Cherries - I recommend using frozen cherries. I freeze mine in the summer when they're in season so I can make cherry smoothies all winter long! If you use fresh ones, make sure the rest of your fruit ingredients are frozen.
- Blueberries - I used frozen wild blueberries, but regular cultivated blueberries work too. Wild ones make the smoothie extra vibrant, have a stronger flavor, and have more antioxidants. I also find they make smoothies a little thicker because they have a lower water content.
- Banana - Frozen banana will give you the most luscious, creamy smoothie. The final texture is completely different than if you used a fresh banana and ice!
- Coconut water - Raw coconut water is high in electrolytes, and it's perfect for smoothies like this one! I always recommend unpasteurized coconut water whenever possible. If you have fresh young Thai coconuts available, you can also use the coconut meat instead of adding yogurt!
- Yogurt - A little bit of coconut yogurt makes the smoothie creamier and more decadent. I like using vegan unsweetened coconut yogurt like Yoggu, but any yogurt will work.
- Protein powder - This is optional, but if you're making this for breakfast, I recommend adding a scoop of vegan unflavored protein powder to make it more filling. A vanilla one or a whey protein would work too if you prefer.
- Flavorings - I add a little bit of vanilla extract and ground cinnamon for a little bit of flavor without overpowering the fruit. Vanilla bean paste is great too. I do also add almond extract, but it's optional (see the paragraph below!).

Variations and Substitutions
- Almond extract - I've recently started adding this to my cherry recipes, and it's such a game changer! It tastes like marzipan, and it's amazing with cherries! It's totally optional if you don't like marzipan or can't have almonds, but I highly recommend it!
- Milk - If you don't have coconut water, you can use unsweetened almond milk, cashew milk, whole milk, or any other non-dairy milk instead. Alternatively, you can also just use still water.
- Sweetener - I don't find this smoothie needs it, but if you like, you can add a little bit of honey or maple syrup to sweeten it.
- Ground flax seeds and chia seeds - I add these to most of my smoothies for extra fiber, healthy fats, and protein. Unless you add way too much flax, these won't change the flavor of the smoothie at all.
- Greens - This is a good smoothie for hiding greens. You can add a big handful of fresh kale (without stems) or baby spinach without changing the flavor much. If you add enough frozen wild blueberries, it may not even change the color because those are very pigmented.
How to Make Blueberry Cherry Smoothie
- Add coconut water, coconut yogurt, protein powder, frozen blueberries, cherries, and banana to a high-speed blender. Add vanilla extract, cinnamon, and almond extract if using.
- Blend on high until smooth. You may need to use your blender's tamper to help it blend without creating air pockets.

Tips & Tricks!
- Add the ingredients in the right order - It's best to add the liquids first to your blender, then any powders, then greens (if using), and lastly fresh or frozen fruit and veggies. This helps everything blend more easily and prevents any powders from sticking to the blender.
- Use frozen fruit - It creates a very different texture than fresh fruit with ice. Frozen fruit will give you a similar texture to a soft-serve ice cream if you make the smoothie thicker, and ice just can't do that.
Serving and Storing
The recipe makes the smoothie thin enough to be drinkable through a straw but still creamy. If you prefer smoothie bowls, you'll have to add less liquid and more frozen fruit.
Smoothie bowl: I recommend starting with only ½ cup of coconut water and only adding more if needed. You'll also have to add a whole frozen banana instead of just a ½ for the right texture. If the smoothie is still too thin, add more frozen banana or fruit.
Optional toppings: Some of the toppings you can add are fresh berries, cherries, granola, yogurt, thick coconut kefir, nuts, seeds, almond butter, peanut butter, or sunflower seed butter.
Storing: The smoothie is best enjoyed right away, but you can store any leftover smoothie in an airtight jar in the fridge for up to 1 day if needed.
