Why This Recipe Works
Triple orange - This smoothie has it all. Orange juice, orange zest, and a whole peeled orange for triple the flavor! It's refreshing, light, creamy, and perfect for a hot summer day. It's creamy all thanks to frozen banana which also cools it down.
Great for summer or citrus season - This is the perfect smoothie to make on a hot summer day because it has no milk or yogurt, just fresh fruit and orange juice.
Easy and simple - The smoothie has very minimal ingredients and it comes together in just a few minutes. All you need to do is chop up the orange and toss everything into a high-speed blender and blend.
Versatile - This recipe is very forgiving and you can make it your own by adding other fruit or ingredients. You can serve it as a snack or even breakfast for breakfast or a light refreshing snack for two.
Ingredients
- Orange - You'll need both a peeled orange and orange zest. Try to remove as much of the white part from the orange as possible because it can make the smoothie bitter.
- Orange juice - I highly recommend using freshly squeezed orange juice for the best flavor but good store-bought juice also works.
- Banana - Frozen banana is what thickens the smoothie and cools it down but you can add a handful of ice as well.
- Mango and pineapple - Frozen mango and/or pineapple give the smoothie color and flavor, cool it down, and thicken it. You can use both or whichever one you have on hand.
- Sweetener - This is totally optional and I often don't find it necessary because the orange is sweet enough but if needed, you can add a touch of agave, honey, or maple syrup.
Variations and Substitutions
- No orange juice - If you don't have orange juice, you can use coconut water, almond milk or plain water.
- Blood orange - This will make the smoothie darker in color because blood orange is dark orange/red, sometimes even purple, inside.
- Vanilla extract - This may be slightly unusual but vanilla extract round all the flavors really well and it's really delicious with orange. You don't need much of it, just ¼-1/2 teaspoon would be enough.
- Ice - If you want to cool the smoothie even more or turn it into more of a slushie, add ice. This also helps when you don't have enough frozen fruit.
Step-by-Step Instructions
- Add everything except honey and ice to a high-speed blender.
- Blend on high until smooth.
- Taste and add sweetener and a handful of ice if needed. Blend again.
- Pour into a tall glass and garnish with a slice of orange if desired. Enjoy!
Serving Suggestions
Serve the smoothie in one or two glasses garnished with a slice of orange if desired. You can make it more fun and serve it in champagne glasses for brunch or a pool party.
Alternatively, you can also serve it in one or two bowls and top it with berries, granola, and coconut flakes for a more filling snack.
Storing
This smoothie has the best flavor and consistency right after it's blended but if you need to, you can store any leftovers you have in an airtight jar in the fridge for up to 24 hours.
Pick a jar that fits the amount of smoothie you have the best. The less air touches the smoothie, the less it will oxidize and the longer it will last.
Alternatively, you can also freeze the smoothie in popsicle molds for a refreshing snack later! Since the popsicles would have frozen fruit in it that's defrosted and frozen again, I recommend storing them for only 1-2 months.
FAQs
If you add protein powder and some healthy fats on the side, it can make a delicious light breakfast. I like enjoying it along with my breakfast instead of orange juice or as a healthy snack.
You can but I recommend adding only orange juice, water, or coconut water to this smoothie. Anything with a higher fat content like milk, yogurt, or cream could curdle in the smoothie.
It's usually not recommended to refreeze defrosted fruits but if you freeze it right away or if you only use fresh fruits, you can freeze your leftovers in a freezer safe container or in an ice cube tray. You can also freeze the smoothie in popsicle molds for an even more refreshing summer treat!

Notes
Adding ice isn’t necessary but I recommend it if you’re using only 1 frozen banana to make the smoothie cooler and slightly thicker.
The smoothie tastes the best served right away but you can store it in an airtight jar in the fridge for up to 24 hours.
