Why This Recipe Works
Refreshing and tropical - Frozen pineapple, mango, and banana with coconut water make the smoothie so flavorful and refreshing, that you won't even notice the spinach! If you're unsure about green smoothies, this is the one to try! You'll be pleasantly surprised how good it is!
Healthy breakfast or snack - Add your favorite protein powder and this smoothie will make a delicious breakfast that will keep you full. You can also skip the protein and serve it as a light refreshing snack for 1-2 people!
Quick and easy - This smoothie calls for simple, easy-to-find ingredients and comes together in just 5 minutes. This makes it perfect for those busy weekday mornings when you don't have any extra time to make breakfast. Just add it to a travel cup and enjoy it on your way to work or school!
Ingredients
- Pineapple - Frozen pineapple thickens and cools down the smoothie. You can use fresh as well but you might have to add some ice.
- Mango - This is optional but to enhance the tropical flavor, I like adding frozen mango. Fresh mango works as well.
- Banana - Frozen banana makes the smoothie extra creamy and naturally sweetens it.
- Spinach - Baby spinach is less bitter than regular spinach. Add as much or as little as you like. Once it's blended with the pineapple, you can barely taste it in the smoothie so it's a perfect way to hide some greens in your breakfast.
- Protein powder - This one is optional but I recommend adding some protein powder if you're serving the smoothie as a meal replacement for breakfast. I like using Sprout Living unflavored protein powder but a vanilla flavored one or anything with added greens is also great in this smoothie.
- Coconut water - Coconut water adds electrolytes and tropical fresh flavor to the smoothie. You can use any other liquid you'd normally use in a green smoothie if you don't have coconut water. Orange juice, almond milk, or plain water also work.
Variations and Substitutions
- Passion fruit - You can add passion fruit pulp to the smoothie for a more tropical tangy flavor.
- No coconut water - If you don't have or don't like coconut water, you can use orange juice, almond milk, or plain water instead.
- Healthy fats - You can add ground flax seeds, hemp seeds, almond butter, or coconut butter for some healthy fats.
Step-by-Step Instructions
- Add everything into a high-speed blender. It’s best to add liquids and the spinach first to help everything blend better and avoid pieces of spinach in your smoothie.
- Blend on high until smooth.
- Add more liquid if needed.
- Pour into a tall glass or two smaller glasses and enjoy right away.
Optinal: Garnish with a slice of fresh pineapple and pineapple leaves for serving.
Serving and Storing
You can serve the smoothie in a tall glass garnished with fresh pineapple or in a bowl topped with your favorite toppings like granola, berries, nut butter, or chopped mango or pineapple.
The smoothie is best consumed right away or you can store it in an airtight jar in the fridge for up to 24 hours. Try to pick a smaller jar because the less air there is in the jar, the longer the smoothie will last. Air oxidizes the smoothie which results in it going bad faster when exposed to too much air.
FAQs
Yes! You can add kale, celery, or your favorite green powder to this smoothie. Keep in mind this will change the flavor of the smoothie.
I recommend enjoying it right away but if you do need to freeze any leftovers, you can pour the smoothie into popsicle molds to have a healthy refreshing snack for later.
