Why This Recipe Works
Coffee milkshake - If you're a fan of iced coffee, you'll love this smoothie! The frozen banana almost makes it taste like a coffee milkshake without any ice cream! If you want a decaf version, you can either use decaf espresso or try this Chocolate Banana Smoothie instead!
The perfect flavor combo - Chocolate and coffee go perfectly together and the flavors really work in this smoothie. You'll feel like you're eating a dessert at breakfast!
Versatile - You can add protein powder to the smoothie and serve it as a light breakfast or you can top it with whipped cream and chocolate sauce to turn it into a dessert or a delicious snack!

Ingredients
- Banana - Frozen banana is ideal here to make the smoothie extra creamy with a milkshake-like texture.
- Espresso - Freshly brewed espresso adds the best flavor but you can use regular brewed coffee, cold brew coffee, or French press.
- Cacao - Both raw cacao powder and cocoa powder work great!
- Almond milk - I recommend almond milk for this smoothie but you can use any dairy-free milk you like (oat milk is great too) or whole milk if you prefer.
- Yogurt - I used non-dairy coconut yogurt but Greek yogurt or any other yogurt you like works. If you don't have yogurt, add an extra splash of milk.
- Medjool dates - The smoothie is sweetened with soft Medjool dates. You can also use maple syrup if you prefer.

Variations and Substitutions
- No yogurt - If you don't have any yogurt on hand, you can add an extra splash of milk or leave it out for a thicker smoothie.
- Decaf - Use decaf espresso or decaf coffee if you're avoiding caffeine.
- Regular coffee - If you don't have an espresso maker, you can use regular strong brewed coffee, cold brew, or French press instead.
- Chocolate syrup - To up the sweetness and chocolate flavor you can add some homemade chocolate sauce. You can also use it as a sweetener instead of dates. I like to also drizzle it on top to make the smoothie extra fancy!
- Sweetener - You can skip adding any sweetener if you want to keep the smoothie lower in sugar. Dates, maple syrup, brown sugar, or stevia are all great options.

Storing
This smoothie, just like any other one, is best served and consumed right away. If you do have any leftovers, store the smoothie in a glass jar in the fridge for up to 24 hours.
I don't recommend freezing the smoothie, the texture won't be as creamy once defrosted.
