Why This Boom Boom Sauce is the Best

Sweet and spicy - This sauce is truly one of my favorite dipping sauces and I make it often. It's a mayonnaise based sauce. It's a little sweet, spicy, tangy, and creamy. It's on a milder side of spicy but you can make it as mild or as hot as you like. You don't need many ingredients to give this sauce a ton of flavor!

Easy to make - You only need 7 ingredients to make this sauce and it can be ready in just 5 minutes. You can stir everything in the same jar you'll store the sauce in so you don't even have to dirty any additional dishes. It's tried and true, simple, totally failproof, and it tastes just like the one from restaurants!

Lots of uses - It makes a fantastic dipping sauce for french fries, seafood, chicken tenders, or anything else! You can also drizzle it over roasted veggies, chicken, or rice bowls, or add it to your burgers and sandwiches! I love it on Boom Boom Shrimp!

Great for meal prep - This sauce stores really well for up to a week in the fridge so it's perfect for meal prep! It's always nice to have a versatile sauce to have on hand to quickly make your meals extra delicious during the week.

    Ingredients

    • Mayonnaise - I like using mayonnaise made with avocado oil but any mayo you have works. You can use vegan mayonnaise if you need to.
    • Sweet chili sauce - I use Thai Kitchen sweet red chili sauce but any brand works great. It's a sweet sauce, usually made with sugar or honey, red chili pepper, rice vinegar, garlic, and spices. It's fairly mild compared to chili garlic sauce.
    • Ketchup - Ketchup adds flavor and color to the sauce. You don't need much but I highly recommend adding it.
    • Sriracha - Sriracha sauce or any other hot sauce you prefer is what makes this sauce spicy. It adds a nice kick but you can add as little or as much as you want!
    • Spices - You'll need garlic powder, onion powder, and fine sea salt for some added flavor.
Condiments like mayonnaise, sweet chili sauce, sriracha, and ketchup in small glass bowls with text overlay.

    Variations and Substitutions

    • Vegan mayo - Use a vegan mayonnaise if needed to make this sauce vegan-friendly.
    • Greek yogurt - This one is by no means traditional but if you want to make a lighter version of this sauce with no mayo, use yogurt instead! I recommend full-fat Greek yogurt.

    Step-by-Step Instructions

    1. Add the mayonnaise, sweet chili sauce, ketchup, sriracha, and spices to a small bowl or a jar.

    1. Whisk the sauce until well-mixed.
    2. Serve immediately or store in an airtight jar or a squeeze bottle in the fridge until ready to use.

    Serving Suggestions

    • Dip - My absolute favorite way to serve it is as a dipping sauce with fries. It's so simple but when everyone is expecting just the classic ketchup, you can wow your guests with this boom boom sauce instead! It's always a hit! If you're feeling extra fancy, try it with french fries, sweet potato fries, Baked Asparagus Fries, chicken tenders, onion rings, or anything else!
    • Fish and seafood - Serve it as a dip for fried seafood like shrimp and calamari, or drizzle it over roasted or grilled salmon, shrimp, or other fish and seafood. It's delicious in shrimp tacos!
    • Burgers and sandwiches - Spread it on your burgers, sandwiches, or even wraps for some spicy and sweet flavor. It's delicious on salmon or chicken burgers and fried shrimp or fish wraps.
    • Veggies - Drizzle it over roasted veggies like peppers, zucchini, broccoli, onions, or anything else.
    • Bowls - You can also drizzle it on rice bowls or quinoa bowls. It's delicious with roasted or grilled chicken, fish, or shrimp and a side salad like this Cucumber Mango Salad.

    Storing

Store the sauce in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 5-7 days. You can also keep it in a squeeze bottle for easy drizzling but you have to use one with a bigger opening because the sweet chili sauce has chili flakes in it and they could clog the squeeze bottle.

I don't recommend freezing the sauce, it's best enjoyed within a week when it's fresh. It wouldn't have the same texture once defrosted.

    FAQs

Where did boom boom sauce originate?

It's said to have originated in the Sheetz chain of convenience stores (gas stations) on the East Coast of the US. It's an Asian-inspired sauce and very similar to bang bang sauce.

What's the difference between bang bang sauce and boom boom sauce?

The two are very similar and the recipes for them vary but in my version, boom boom sauce has added spices and no rice vinegar. Bang bang sauce also has added honey.
