Why This Recipe Works
Amazing flavor combination - I got the idea to make this smoothie after I made this Iced Strawberry Oat Matcha Latte. It's a delicious flavor combination and I drink that matcha latte almost every single day! I knew I had to create a matcha strawberry smoothie as well! The earthy matcha goes really well with the sweet pureed strawberries and it makes a delicious breakfast.
A good source of caffeine - Matcha, just like any green tea, contains caffeine. It's said to be better for you than coffee and if coffee gives you the jitters, you should definitely give matcha a try, and especially this delicious smoothie! It will keep you energized for hours and if you add protein powder, it will keep you full as well!
Simple and beautiful - The smoothie has two layers but it's still incredibly easy to make. You'll first puree fresh strawberries and then blend the matcha smoothie. The two are layered in a tall glass and mixed together right before drinking. This smoothie is sure to impress at any brunch and takes just 10 minutes to make!
Ingredients
- Strawberries - Fresh strawberries are ideal here because they don't need any water to blend into a puree. You can use frozen if necessary but they will need water to blend well.
- Matcha powder - I recommend using ceremonial matcha powder because it tends to be sweeter and less bitter than the other varieties but any matcha powder works. There's no need to sift it into the smoothie.
- Frozen fruit - I used frozen banana, mango, and pineapple to thicken the smoothie and give it more flavor as well as cool it down. You can use any variation of the three. I wouldn't recommend adding any berries or anything that would change the color of the smoothie too much.
- Almond milk - You can use any milk you'd normally add to your smoothies or matcha here. Boxed coconut milk, almond milk, oat milk, or whole milk are all great options. Alternatively, you can use coconut water or orange juice as well.
- Protein powder - This is optional but a great addition if you want to serve this smoothie for breakfast. I like using unflavored protein powder but vanilla flavor is also great.
Variations and Substitutions
- Greens - If you want to make the matcha smoothie even greener, you can add greens to the blender like baby spinach, kale or baby kale.
- Different berries - If you don't have strawberries, you can use other fresh berries. Raspberries, blackberries, or blueberries are all great options for this smoothie.
- No milk - You can blend the matcha smoothie with coconut water, orange juice, or plain water if you prefer.
- Add-ins - You can add things like almond milk, hemp seeds, ground flax seeds, or other superfoods that won't change the green color of the smoothie.
Step-by-Step Instructions
- Add strawberries into a high-speed blender and blend on high until pureed.
- Pour into a glass and set aside.
- Rinse your blender with water and add almond milk, matcha powder, baby spinach (if using), frozen banana, frozen pineapple, and protein powder (if using).
- Blend on high until smooth.
Would you like to save this recipe?
- Add some of the pureed strawberries into a tall glass followed by some of the matcha smoothie.
- Layer the two until all is used. This can be one large glass or divided into two glasses.
- Garnish with a strawberry and enjoy with a straw to mix the two layers.
Serving Suggestions
You can either serve the smoothie by adding the strawberry puree into your glass or two glasses first and then pouring the matcha smoothie on top, or you can layer the two for a layered effect.
Garnish the smoothie with a fresh strawberry or a dusting of matcha powder on top. You'll want to serve it with a glass straw as well to be able to mix the two layers together before drinking it.
The smoothie makes a great snack for two people on a hot summer day or when you add protein powder, it makes a great breakfast. Keep in mind that matcha contains caffeine.
Storing
The smoothie is best enjoyed right away but if needed, it can be stored in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 24 hours.
You can store the smoothie mixed together or store the blended strawberries separately from the matcha smoothie.
You can also make pretty popsicles with this smoothie. Just layer the strawberry puree and matcha smoothie into popsicle molds, add popsicle sticks, and freeze overnight. Store in the freezer for 1-2 months.
FAQs
Matcha is a type of green tea and it contains caffeine. The amount varies based on the source and freshness of the matcha powder you use. In general, 1 teaspoon of matcha has approximately 65mg of caffeine. In comparison, one shot of espresso has about 40-80 mg of caffeine
Matcha, just like green tea is high in antioxidants. It's generally said matcha is healthier than coffee. It doesn't give most people the same jitters coffee does because its caffeine content is released more slowly in your body.
I highly recommend using ceremonial-grade matcha for your lattes and smoothies whenever possible. It's more expensive but it has better flavor. It's more sweet, less bitter, less grass-tasting, and has a brighter, more vibrant green color.
You can but it won't be green. I made the smoothie in two layers because if you mix the strawberries with matcha, the smoothie will have a muddy color. It will still be delicious but just not as pretty.

If you don't want your Matcha strawberry smoothie to look brown, then this layering technique is the way to go. I use raspberries instead of pineapple and oat milk instead of almond milk because that's what I had. Turned out great!
