    Why You'll Love This Latte

Delicious flavor combination - Matcha and orange syrup may be an unusual combination if you’ve never had it but it’s so good, you'll love it! The homemade syrup is made with just 3 ingredients! Orange zest, cane sugar, and water. You can make your own or use store-bought. Leftover syrup can be used for cocktails, mocktails, tea, or other lattes.

Energy boost - Matcha contains caffeine just like coffee but it also has lots of antioxidants just like any green tea. The caffeine in matcha is released more slowly which gives you a longer, more stable energy throughout the day. It's also said not to give people the same jitters and anxiety that coffee sometimes does.

Better than a coffee shop - Making your own lattes at home can be fun, easy, and just as good if not better than the one at your favorite cafe! You can keep an eye on how much syrup, milk, and matcha is going into your latte, as well as how good and clean all the ingredients are.

Budget-friendly - Getting a latte at a coffee shop every morning or even every week can get expensive quickly, so making your own at home is more delicious and much more budget-friendly! Making the homemade syrup that makes about 12 lattes will cost you about the same as 1 latte at a fancy cafe! It’s a win-win!

    Ingredients

    • Matcha - I highly recommend using ceremonial grade matcha over culinary grade matcha. It's more expensive and comes in small packages but it tastes, sweeter, less bitter, and it has a brighter green color. It also has much nicer foam when whisked.
    • Orange simple syrup - You'll need cane sugar, water, and fresh orange peel to make your own orange syrup. Alternatively, you can use store-bought syrup.
    • Almond milk - You can use any milk you'd normally use in your matcha latte. Almond milk, light coconut milk (in a carton), oat milk, or whole milk all work great.
    • Hot water - You'll need hot water to whisk the matcha with. Remember not to boil it! Matcha only needs warm or hot water (up to 75-80C). When you whisk it with water that's too hot or that boiled, it can turn bitter.
    • Orange slices - This is just for garnish and totally optional if you want to make your drink extra pretty.
Sliced orange, almond milk, matcha powder, orange syrup and hot water in small bowls.

    Variations and Substitutions

    • Hot not iced - You can make this matcha hot instead of iced if you prefer. Just warm up your milk before you add the whisked matcha and skip the ice!
    • Store-bought syrup - If you don't have time to make your own syrup, you can use store-bought! I like this Monin Candied Orange Syrup but there are many other orange syrups to choose from like Torani and DaVinci.

    Step-by-Step Instructions

First, you'll need to make the orange syrup if you're using homemade. I recommend doing this ahead of time and storing the syrup in the fridge until ready to use.

    Orange Simple Syrup

    1. Add sugar, water, and orange zest into a small saucepan.
    2. Bring the mixture to a boil stirring constantly until the sugar has dissolved.
    3. Lower the heat to a simmer and cook for 15 minutes.
    4. Take off the heat and let it rest for 10-15 minutes before removing the orange zest.
    5. Pour the syrup into an airtight glass jar and store it in the fridge for up to 2 weeks.

    Serving and Storing

The orange syrup can be stored in the fridge for up to 2 weeks so it's great to make ahead of time so that serving the actual latte only takes a couple of minutes! The latte itself is best enjoyed right away, it doesn't store well.

You can garnish the matcha with a slice of fresh orange or a dried orange slice.

    FAQs

Can I add freshly squeezed orange juice?

I made the orange syrup with orange zest only and no orange juice because I make a lot of lattes with it and mixing citrus juice and milk can curdle the milk due to the high acidity of the juice. Because of this, I don't recommend adding orange juice to this latte. You can however mix orange juice with matcha on their own and enjoy it over ice as a refreshing drink!

    Can I freeze the syrup?

Yes, you can freeze any leftover syrup either in an ice cube tray or in a good ziplock bag you know won't leak. Most syrups are too high in sugar so they won't freeze fully. Because of this I like to freeze the syrup in bags because it can be harder to take the syrup out of the ice cube tray.

    Description

This Iced Orange Matcha Latte is a delicious energy-boosting drink made with homemade orange simple syrup. You can make it both hot and cold.

    Ingredients

    Units Scale

    Orange Simple Syrup

    • 1 cup cane sugar
    • 1 cup water
    • The zest of 1 orange, chopped (remove as much of the white parts as possible, see notes)

    Iced Orange Matcha Latte

    • 1 tsp matcha powder, sifted
    • ⅓ cup hot water
    • ½-¾ cup milk (almond, light coconut, or cashew are great dairy-free options)
    • 2 tbsp orange simple syrup
    • Ice
    • Garnish: a slice of orange (optional)

    4. Pour the whisked matcha over the ice.

    Notes

Orange zest: the soft white part of the orange is bitter and should be cut off. The best way to do this is to zest the orange using a vegetable peeler.

Orange syrup: The syrup makes about 10 servings and lasts for up to 2 weeks. You can half the recipe if needed or freeze your leftovers.

An unusual combo but SO good! I saw it on someone's Instagram story from a coffee shop in LA and had to recreate it!
