    Homemade is always better

This is honestly my favorite seasoning. I like to make a big batch and put it on anything and everything savory.

It's so easy to make and so worth it. Much cheaper than using store-bought!

The combination of toasted sesame seeds, garlic, onion, and salt is a match made in heaven!

What is Everything Bagel Seasoning made with?

Making everything bagel seasoning is super easy. It's made with ingredients you probably already have in your cupboard!

    What you need:

    • raw sesame seeds - I use unhulled (whole) brown and black sesame seeds for variety but you can use only brown or hulled white sesame seeds too
    • poppy seeds
    • onion flakes - not onion powder, it's too fine for this blend
    • garlic flakes - same deal as the onion flakes, it makes the texture better if you use flakes rather than powder
    • Maldon sea salt flakes (sal de Mer) - thin flaky sea salt which is perfect for this seasoning
    • caraway seeds (optional) - this isn't in every mix you'll find in the stores but I love adding them to add extra flavor

What can I put everything bagel seasoning on?

You can put it on literally anything that would go well with sesame seed, garlic, or onion. For example:

    • Pastry - I made these Spinach and Feta Triangles and sprinkled everything bagel seasoning on top. It's so good!
    • BAGELS! - duh. Not just for when you're baking them! Sprinkle it on a toasted bagel with cream cheese and smoked salmon. So delicious!
    • Toasted bread with any kind of savory spread (guac, labneh, etc.)
    • Eggs - perfect on sunny side up eggs
    • Pasta - I made spaghetti Aglio e olio with everything bagel seasoning the other day and it was so good! Sounds weird but I promise it's so good.
    • Roasted nuts - try these Cajun Roasted Nuts, just sub the cajun spice for this seasoning!
    • Pizza
    • Roasted veggies (or fish or meat if you're not vegetarian)
Spinach and Feta Triangles on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper. One triangle cut in half.

    Description

This homemade Everything Bagel Seasoning is the ultimate seasoning blend. It goes with almost anything and it's so easy to make!

    Ingredients

    Units Scale
    • ¼ cup dried onion flakes
    • ¼ cup dried garlic flakes
    • ¼ cup poppy seeds
    • ⅓ cup raw sesame seeds
    • 1 tbsp flaky sea salt

    Instructions

    1. Start by toasting the sesame seeds.
    2. Heat a large pan over medium-high heat. When hot, add the sesame seeds and toast for a few minutes. Move them around with a wooden spoon or by shaking the pan. You’ll know they’re done when they become fragrant, start to smoke a little, or a few of them pop. Bre sure not to burn them. Immediately take them off the heat and transfer them to a plate to cool completely before using.
    3. Use a mortar and pestle if your onion and garlic flakes are too large. This step is optional.
    4. When ready, add all the ingredients into a glass jar, cover with a lid and shake to combine.
    5. Store in a cool dark place (not the fridge) for 2-3 months.

    Notes

Make sure your sesame seeds are untoasted. You can also buy toasted sesame seeds and skip the toasting but I like to toast them myself. Toasted sesame seeds are sensitive to heat and if you make them yourself it extends their shelf life.

This seasoning looks fantastic. And it's so healthy because each ingredient is healthy too.
If I decide to make it, I'll use it with store-bought white bread, to give some nutrition to that processed stuff.
