Why You'll Love This Pear Syrup
Perfect for fall and winter - This syrup is perfect for Thanksgiving and any fall party or family gathering! It goes really well with warming spices and any aged spirits. You can use it in both cocktails and mocktails so the whole family can enjoy it!
Easy and simple - The recipe calls for just three ingredients. All you need is sugar, water, and chopped pear. The syrup is ready in under 30 minutes and it can be stored for 2 weeks in the fridge. It's also freezer-friendly so there's never any waste!
Ingredients
- Cane sugar - You can use either cane sugar or regular white sugar here. I like using cane sugar because it's slightly less processed but it still has a very neutral flavor that doesn't overpower the pear.
- Fresh pear - The sweeter and more flavorful the pears, the better the syrup! Choose sweet ripe pears with a lot of flavor.
- Water - I recommend using filtered water whenever possible for the best flavor.
Variations and Substitutions
- Sugar-free - You can try using a sugar-free sweetener that can be used in a 1:1 ratio instead of regular sugar. I haven't tested this so I can't guarantee results. Keep in mind that sugar acts as a preservative here so when you leave it out, the syrup won't last as long.
- Cinnamon - You can add a stick of cinnamon for the last 5 minutes of cooking to add a little bit of cinnamon flavor to the syrup. The two go really well together. I wouldn't simmer the cinnamon with the pear for the whole 15 minutes though because the pear has a very mild flavor and the cinnamon could easily overpower it.
- Vanilla extract - Add 1-2 teaspoons of vanilla extract after turning off the heat for added flavor. It won't have a strong vanilla flavor but it will compliment the pear really well.
Step-by-Step Instructions
- Add cane sugar, water, and chopped pears to a medium saucepan.
- Bring the mixture to a simmer while stirring constantly until the sugar dissolves to prevent it from sticking to the bottom and burning.
- Simmer the syrup for 15 minutes.
- Take it off the heat and allow it to rest for 10 minutes.
- Strain the syrup into a large measuring cup or a bowl through a fine mesh strainer.
- Using the back of a spoon, squeeze as much juice out of the pears as you can.
- Pour the syrup into an airtight jar and wait for it to cool down before closing with a lid.
- Store it in the fridge for up to 2 weeks.
Serving Suggestions
- Cocktails - You can pair this syrup with bourbon, whiskey, dark, rum, and even gin or vodka. I haven't tried it with tequila but I'm sure it would be great as well. I'd definitely go with Reposado or Anejo for this syrup.
- Mocktails - This syrup pairs well with any warming fall spices like ginger, cinnamon, or cloves. Those especially bring out the flavor of the pear. Try it in this Apple Cider Mocktail!
- Tea - Pear syrup would be delicious in any fall spiced tea. Try it in chai, or any tea with cinnamon, ginger, apple, pear, or any other fall flavor!
- Apple cider or hot toddy - This syrup is delicious in other warm drinks besides just tea. Try it in hot apple cider or hot cocktails like a hot toddy, mulled wine, or boozy apple cider.
Storing and Make Ahead Options
Simple syrups are great for making ahead because they store really well in the fridge. If you're planning to make pear cocktails at a holiday party or any gathering, I highly recommend making the syrup the night before or a few days prior so that it's all ready for you and chilled when you're making the cocktails.
Fridge - Store the syrup in an airtight jar in the fridge for up to 2 weeks. Always use a clean spoon to avoid spoiling. The syrup might naturally separate a little bit as it has some pear puree that was pushed through the fine mesh strainer. This is normal. If you notice any mold, discoloration, or an off smell, discard the syrup immediately.
Freezer - You can store any leftover syrup in a freezer-safe container in the freezer for 2-4 months. If you know right away you won't be able to use all of the syrup within two weeks, I highly recommend freezing some of it when it's fresh. I like freezing my syrups in 2-4 serving (4-8 tablespoon) containers and labeling them so that I know exactly how much syrup I need to defrost each time.

Because there will be some peach puree in your syrup, it will naturally separate slightly. This is ok, just stir your syrup before every use. If it separates completely, develops an off smell or mold, or changes color, discard it immediately.
Yes, always refrigerate your homemade syrups to prevent bacteria growth.
