This Blueberry Margarita is a fun summer twist on the classic cocktail. It's made with homemade blueberry syrup that gives the drink a beautiful bright purple color. It's sure to be a hit at any summer bbq or party!

Ingredients

Units Scale

Blueberry Simple Syrup

  • 1 cup wild blueberries (fresh or frozen, or sub 2 cups classic Canadian blueberries)
  • 1 cup cane sugar (or maple syrup)
  • 1 cup water
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract (optional)

Blueberry Margarita

  • 1 lime wedge
  • 1 tbsp fine sea salt
  • Ice
  • 1 1/2 oz tequila (silver or reposado)
  • 1/2 oz Cointreau
  • 1 oz freshly squeezed lime juice
  • 1 oz blueberry simple syrup
  • Blueberries and lime slices for garnish (optional)

Instructions

Blueberry Simple Syrup

  1. Add blueberries, cane sugar, and water to a saucepan and bring it to a boil. Stir often, in the beginning, to make sure the sugar melts properly.
  2. Lower the heat and simmer for 15 minutes.
  3. Take the syrup off the heat, stir in vanilla extract, and allow it to cool for 10 minutes.
  4. Strain through a fine mesh strainer into a large measuring cup or a bowl. You can reserve the blueberries to use on oatmeal, pancakes, toast, or ice cream as you would jam.
  5. Pour into a glass jar and store in the fridge for up to 2 weeks. Wait until the syrup is completely cool before closing the jar.

Blueberry Margarita

  1. Start by prepping your glass. Run a lime wedge around the rim of the glass and dip it in sea salt. Fill the glass with ice and set aside.
  2. Into a cocktail shaker add tequila, Cointreau, lime juice, blueberry simple syrup, and a handful of ice.
  3. Shake the cocktail vigorously for a few seconds until very cool to the touch.
  4. Strain the drink over ice into your prepared glass and garnish with a slice of lime and blackberries.

Notes

Storing: Store syrup in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 2 weeks.

Non-alcoholic version: 1 oz freshly squeezed lime juice, 1 oz freshly squeezed orange juice, 1 oz blueberry simple syrup, ice, and seltzer or sparkling water. Shake everything except seltzer in a cocktail shaker and pour over ice. Top up with seltzer and enjoy!
